A great board chair or facilitator makes a point of ensuring that all board members feel empowered to use their voice to ask questions and share their ideas. They employ a variety of meeting techniques such as small group or working in pairs, asking board members to submit ideas ahead of time to draw out the introverts, asking great questions and then inviting everyone share their thoughts, and helping to create a positive and uplifting environment in the boardroom. This doesn’t mean a boardroom should be free of conflict. Conflict can be healthy, as long as everyone respects each other and the board chair is managing it constructively.
